The Task
The client approached us with a clear request: promote their exclusive Lifestyle Expo through digital channels. They needed to drive high-value ticket sales and pack the venue with the right audience. No easy feat when you're competing for attention in the crowded events market.
The Objective
Our marching orders were straightforward: clear and direct, leaving no room for confusion or misinterpretation:
Yes, you read it right. We didn't have any exact sales goals, just online ticket sales with positive ROI. On one hand, that's fine, sounds like less pressure. On the other hand, it makes it difficult to measure real success or figure out whether we truly satisfied the client. So it's actually more pressure in the end.
The Challenges
There was no shortage of challenges: one roadblock after another. But that's what makes it fun for us.
Zero Previous Analytics
They had no real historical data to guide our strategy. No Google Analytics, no Adobe Analytics, or any other fancy tools. We were essentially flying blind, which meant every decision needed to be data-driven from day one.
Misused Meta Pixel Events
Their previous agency had set up a Meta Pixel on their site; we thought, “Hooray, finally.” But when we checked their Facebook Ads account, we discovered they were optimizing for the wrong events. Damn. It’s like training for a marathon but preparing for a sprint instead. The effort was there, but the focus was completely off.
Remote Location
The venue was located well outside any major metropolitan area, making it harder to reach potential attendees. When your event isn't in the heart of a bustling city, you need to work extra hard to get people willing to travel.
No Pre-Warmed Audiences
Outside of the Pixel data, there were no existing remarketing lists or engaged audiences to tap into. We had to build almost everything from scratch.
The Solution
We started by tackling the mentioned challenges one by one. Before launching any campaigns, we first had to fix everything that was broken.
Facebook Advertising Audit
We conducted a thorough Facebook Ads account audit and discovered the Pixel event misconfigurations. The previous agency had been optimizing for "Page Views" and "Initiate Checkout" events, rather than "Purchase".
Why is this bad? Because many people start the checkout process and never finish it. When Facebook finds you, more and more people who start checking out but never complete it...well, that's like throwing money on your campfire on a cool Friday night.
Moreover, for some reason, the “Purchase” event was completely missing from their setup. We fixed this and confirmed that it was working properly, allowing us to use it for optimization.
Analytics Overhaul
Since they lacked GA4 analytics, we set up comprehensive tracking from scratch by implementing Google Analytics on their site. Then we created custom events, built beautiful and useful (yes, this combo exists) custom dashboards, and implemented conversion tracking that actually made sense.
Oh and of course, we connected Analytics to the Google Ads account. Knowledge is power, and proper data gives you that.
Pre-Sales Awareness Phase
As a beginning of our advertising strategy, we created a strategic warm-up period focused on awareness rather than immediate sales. We built several information-rich landing pages designed to educate and engage our target audience about the event. Important - these weren't about hard selling.
Naturally, the visitors had an option to buy early bird tickets, but the concept was about building genuine interest and creating a qualified audience for later remarketing. For this phase, we used “cheap” traffic campaigns and measured everything that happened on the pages.
Multi-Platform Campaign Rollout
Once the pre-sales phase finished, we launched our sales campaign.
The star of the show was our sales-focused Facebook advertising approach optimized for purchases using the Meta Pixel. In these ads, we showcased the event and heavily A/B tested visuals, copy, and placements. We used the previously collected pre-warmed audiences for retargeting and also reached out to cold audiences.
Naturally, we ran Instagram ads alongside the Facebook ads, with a slightly different visual approach tailored to the platform's aesthetic.
As a next step, we deployed Google search ads. We performed a thorough keyword research and discovered that many people were looking for programs around the area. So why not capture them? We used a small chunk of the budget to target these high-intent potential ticket buyers.
Then we complemented this with Google Display campaigns, using static images, animated HTML5 banners, and in-video solutions. All designed to raise awareness across relevant websites, build brand recognition, and of course, sell tickets.
Conversion Rate Optimization
Throughout the campaign, we continuously optimized the conversion rate. We used GA4 Analytics and our specialized software to analyze the entire conversion path. Our landing pages went through multiple iterations: adding information, removing friction, testing different colors and layouts. We can be pretty obsessed with getting the details right.
The Results
As you are aware by now, the client's original goal was to achieve a positive ROI. Well, it can be said that we delivered. Or overdelivered:
Not bad for a remote location with basically no existing audience, right?
Cumulative Daily Ticket Sales for the Event
The combination of proper tracking setup, strategic audience building, and multi-platform campaign execution proved that with the right approach, even the most challenging circumstances can become wins.
And the best part? Now, with proper Meta Pixel and Analytics setup, coming events will be built on a solid foundation.
